Grades 7 and 8

“It is like a voyage of discovery into unknown lands,

seeking not for new territory but for new knowledge.

It should appeal to those with a good sense of adventure.”

— Frederick Sanger, British biochemist,

talking about his research (but we think it applies to VOYAGER!)

VOYAGER is a two-year educational program for a mixed-age class of highly motivated 7th and 8th grade students who seek to chart a learning journey that offers meaningful academic and personal challenges.

Students ages 12–14 are entering a new stage of human development—early adolescence. Using the sea as a metaphor for the sometimes rough but exciting experiences that this period of human development offers, we encourage students to approach the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social challenges ahead with a spirit of adventure—as VOYAGERS sailing off to discover new worlds.

The VOYAGER curriculum has been developed to align with:

  • Developmentally appropriate practices for “best schools”

  • Developmental needs of students ages 12–14

  • Learning needs of 21st century students

  • Curricular standards outlined by the American Montessori Society

  • State/national subject-specific curricular standards

“Voyager is the most fun I have ever had at school. The math class is one of the most interesting and engaging math classes I've ever had. We learn everything through such a creative and interactive lens.”

— Voyager 8th Grader

In the Press

“‘We should be mindful of the beach and remember that there are animals and creatures that live in this habitat,’ remarks Wellan Montessori seventh grader Maria Alam, of Waltham.”

“Wellan Montessori Middle School students recently completed a full semester of ocean study with Wellan’s Voyager Program, named for its mission to educate students in the field, in addition to the classroom setting.”
