FEATURED LESSON:
Language Objects with Corresponding Pictures

Curricular Area

Language

Skills

Vocabulary Expansion, Categorizing, Understanding of Abstract Representations, Working Cooperatively and Independently

WHAT IS IT?

Students pair objects with cards

that depict the objects through images and words.

By working with materials such as Language Objects with Corresponding Pictures, children expand their understanding of abstract representations. This is an important step which prepares children to do more advanced works with letters and words in Primary; this early foundation enables most of our students to read and write before first grade.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The child matches the card to an object, saying the object’s name out loud. The child repeats this process for other objects in the basket.

A VARIATION

Language cards can be used in other ways as well: in a group setting during circle time, for example, or between two friends.

Watch as one student presents the cards while her partner responds verbally with matching words.
