Wellan Travel Grant
Thanks to the generosity of alumni parents Josh Klevens and Anna Sinaiko, the Wellan Faculty Travel Fellowship allows faculty to pursue travel-based research during the summer. The intent is to offer fellowship recipients opportunities that will re-invigorate them as adult learners, deepening their ability to teach from what Montessori called the “spirit” within them.
â
For the inaugural year of the travel grant, two teachers received fellowships of $2,500 each. Lower Elementary teacher Amanda Cusanno traveled outside the U.S. for the first time to explore Iceland. She visited a national park that is the dividing line between two tectonic plates, toured a Viking museum, and marveled at glaciers. Former Primary teacher (now Wellan’s Advancement Associate) Sarah Chadwick journeyed to Peru. She visited a Reggio Emilia school in Lima, spent time learning about weaving in Cuzco, and hiked Machu Picchu.
â
In the second year of the program, another two fellowships were awarded. Art Specialist Vanessa Irzyk traveled to Barcelona, Spain to study the work and lives of architect Antoni Gaudi and surrealist painter, Salvador Dali. Music Specialist Katie Ng toured Vienna, Prague, Berlin, and Amsterdam to attend concerts in the venues for which they were composed.
â
Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 travel grant fellowships were cancelled, but we are excited to reintroduce the travel grant for summer of 2022!
