3rd Grade Internship
What do a photojournalist, a curriculum designer, and a library assistant have in common? They are all internships in the third-year program. Each year, the LE Y3 students are given the opportunity to serve a community outside of their classroom, but within Wellan. These internships also introduce students to some of the experiences related to finding and holding an internship, such as reflecting on skills/interests, applying to Internships, following through with responsibilities, getting feedback from a supervisor, and self-assessing.
Ada Wagner, Primary 6 Intern
Q: What is the coolest thing you’ve learned?
A: P6 students showed me that I am not alone and that if I gave up I would never know everything but I can always keep trying.
Gabby Crystal, Photojournalist Intern
Q: What is your favorite project that you’ve worked on?
A: Learning how to work a camera and looking through pictures from the cardboard challenge.
The Y3 students start the program by taking an interest/skill survey to help them consider the types of Internships that would be a good fit for them. They attend a career fair to learn about available internships, and then select their top three. Once placed in an internship, they meet with their supervisor for a mock interview and discuss what their responsibilities and schedule will look like. Then the students will attend their internship once a week for thirty minutes from November until February Break. Halfway through the internship, they will receive feedback from their supervisor and also complete a self-assessment. At the conclusion of the internship, they will reflect on their experiences and personal growth and write a thank you letter to their supervisor for their willingness to take on an internship.
The service learning experience that comes from the Y3 internships allows students to give back to their community while learning new skills and creating new relationships within the Wellan community. More often than not, when the third years get to invite a special guest to the Third Year Cafe in the spring they often invite their supervisor. The Y3 Internship is truly a service learning experience that the whole community benefits from and the LE students look forward to.
